Melting Stone Sculptures by the Modern Day Druid José Manuel Castro López

You may call José Manuel Castro López an alchemist, or a druid for his unbelievable skill of bending the stones to his will. It appears, though, he is actually a very skillful artist and sculptor after all. His work focuses on rocks of all sizes skillfully transformed in such a way that it appears they are soft. It may seem like you can fold them around just with your fingers. Each of these surreal stone sculptures is carefully grinded down to perfection from a piece of quartz or granite. Marking the stone with that unique twist.

I am the sculptor who softens the stones; A druid as a metaphor.

The stone inspires me. My relationship with her is not physical, but magical. All my creative ability is aimed at establishing a vital relationship with the material. We understand each other, we respect each other, we obey … we are friends; It is not an inert material, it lives. I do not sculpt, it is the stone that manifests itself.

My technique is the one that propitiates the burst of sparks in the brains of the spectator. You do not see the action of the sculptor, the imprint of the tool does not exist; However, my sculptures are carved, sculpted.

Of the future of my work I know nothing. The work, the reflection will tell me. In short, evolution. It seems a miracle to find new roads every day on your journey. Daily work should flow, but not always. From the difficulties arise new findings, which lead me to unsuspected goals.
