No, you are not seeing double! Berlin based photographer and artist Casey McKee created this striking collection of mirror paintings. Casey began this series by photographing people. He then digitally manipulated the selection that he intended to work with. After that, printing them as black and white photographs onto canvas. Finally, he worked his magic on them with oil paint to give them color, texture and a painterly feel. They are both photographs and paintings, coexisting within each discipline. Frozen in time, forever merging two worlds. Mysteriously peaking from behind a mirror.
My primary source of inspiration for making my art is experiencing artwork from other artists. That includes all mediums, although primarily from music and painting. When I see really exciting work or listen to great music I feel very moved to create.
I came to be a visual artist through photography, and photography has always made sense to me. I think about creating my images first through the photographic medium, but then I want to take them further, closer towards paintings. I enjoy the tension that is created when the final work sits in between the two mediums and the boundary where the photograph ends and the painting starts begins to disappear. it is always a balancing act for me when I am painting them, not to take them too far away from the photograph but also just far enough. The process for me is very important. Art, for the artist, is ninety-nine percent process and only one percent exhibition. If the process stops being interesting for the artist, I think it will show in the work.
This has been a busy year for me with four solo exhibitions in Frankfurt, Berlin, New York and Switzerland. I now get to begin playing again with new ideas where I will create a lot of studies on paper to see what I will focus on next. I am going to be in a curated group exhibition at the Tucson Museum of Art in February. What comes after that remains to be seen.
