Every City has its own unique history and culture. Architecture and famous landmarks make larger cities instantly recognizable worldwide. I seems like these cityscapes are an endless inspiration to designers and artists. But not all of them can create something so unique and striking that can take your breath away. New York based designer, Rafael Esquer aka Alfalfa created unique New York poster that will blow your mind. This superb print called Iconic New York Illuminated is heavily inspired by artworks of famous symbolist painter Gustav Klimt. This poster contains over 600 iconic destinations around the Big Apple rendered in a gold and silver foil combo.
We are faithful to our creative philosophy: Make the idea clear and simple, the design surprising and beautiful.
The main inspiration was the extraordinaty city of New York, the energy of New York at night to be more specific. I wanted to evoke the nostalgic feeling of a “first night in New York.” Seeing New York at night produces special memories and feelings for visitors and residents alike.
Few years ago, I visited the city of Vienna. There I had the priviledge to see up close and personal the extraordinary painting “The Kiss” by Gustav Klimt at Galerie Belvedere. I fell in love with it. When working on the design of the New York poster, I realized an intrinsic pattern that reminded me of the work of Klimt. After I completed the work, I envisioned a print of Manhattan in radiant gold and silver foils and luminous metallic inks. I searched all over the world for a master printer to produce it. After six months of research and two months of printing, the Iconic New York Illuminated was produced. Inspired by Klimt and proudly made in New York.
There are two projects we have been working on for more than two years. One is an alphabet inspired by impossible figures, this will be released as a limited edition poster and a typeface. Then, continuing with the Iconic poster series, we’ll be launching the Iconic London in the spring of 2017. Iconic London will be a humble homage to one of the most vibrant and beautiful cities in the world.
New York Poster is just the Tip of the Iceberg!
I believe Klimt himself would be proud of this sensational achievment. All we can do now is sit tight and wait for the London piece, expecting greatness in the future.
