Diana Beltran Herrera, Colombian artist and designer, is a true bird lover. Her fascination with our feathery friends follows her since the earliest age. She started working on her bird inspired art, discovering use of ordinary materials in the production of her work. Soon paper, cardboard, plastic, and wire became her primary media. Her latest two series Bird Postage Stamps & Birds are where her talent with paper and love for nature really shines through. Diana’s realistic approach to creating exotic paper bird species from around the world is great way to send a message, and educate the viewers at the same time. Each unique postage stamp comes from one of the countries which she has always admired.
I have a need of making. Making allows me to understand the things that surround me.
I am interested in the everyday. When I started this series of birds I was just looking trough the window and feel intrigued by a bird that was flying. Sometimes Im just interested in what has always been there around me. It is really interesting when the view I have from those things transforms from normal and somehow become special, worth looking at. Trough this way of looking I have engaged with different things, one of them nature. I am using my work to learn, but also to bring out the things that I see.
Paper, for me was a very easy medium to transform. I am not very patient to try oil on canvas. It seems like I am more a person that is looking for immediate response. Also what I like about paper is that it is very fragile so anything you do in it its perceive in a different way. Some of the things that I represent are not respected of even get much attention. When I presented them in paper its like people really value all the effort someone has put into it, but what I am pointing out is not how I did it but the object or animal that I am representing, so we learn something new from this point of view.
I am working in different personal projects. Now I am creating a food project based on healthy foods. I am inspired by botanical illustration but I want to bring something new to it, to make it interesting for people. The idea is to create a book with all different products that contribute to a healthy diet. I started this project because I wasn’t engage at all with natural products. Trough this project I am learning a lot by making.
