First fully Painted Feature Film about Van Gogh – Loving Vincent

“Loving Vincent” is groundbreaking film about life and mysterious death of no other than Van Gogh himself! What’s amazing about this Film is that it is completely animated using actual oil paintings for each frame. Impressed yet? Well, there’s more! Each painting is created in Vincent’s unique and recognizable style. I was specially intrigued to hear that this film will be created from 56,800 Paintings by 40+ artists! Jaw dropping, isn’t it?

To make this film in a record time and make it easier for the artists they developed special Painted Animation Work Stations (PAWS). These stations allowed them to make stop-motion painting as efficient as possible. Granting the artists to focus on the painting as opposed to the animation made the process so much better. And this is how PAWS look like.

You might ask, why Van Gogh of all people? Well, do I even need to explain. He was “Just” a post-Impressionist painter whose work had huge influence on 20th century art, giving him a flashy title “Father of modern Art”. His painting, Starry Night, is still considered to be one of the famous pieces of all time. Do I really need to mention his life story? Having to deal with mental illness, selling just a single of his paintings in his lifetime, and cutting his own ear. Oh, yeah, all before shooting himself at the age of 37.

Did you know that Van Gogh’s painting carrier lasted only 8 years? Yes, its true! This haven’t prevented him in creating number of iconic, recognisable pieces, and becoming one of the most memorable figures of the last century. He picked up brush at age of 29 and started creating wonders. These paintings are paying tribute to this Great Man’s work in such a special way that even he would be struck with these exquisite pieces of art.

Van Gogh would be proud!

“Loving Vincent” is in post-production now, and is expected to be released by the end of the 2016. All that is left to us is to wait and wonder what is to be next by the amazing crew behind this project. But for now, why don’t you check their Kickstarter campaign and get involved. Guys from BreakThru Films prepared a lot of cool gifts for their backers.

Director Dorota Kobiela, and Head of Painting Piotr Dominiak will select their favourite 20 paintings out of the 500 plus paintings that we will have by end of the training. All of the paintings will be based on a Vincent painting from Arles, St Remy or Auvers era, and will be painted in oils and will be around 90 cm in width and 60 cm in height.

What an epic achievement, I applaud you ladies and gentlemen!
