Voûtes Célestes is interactive virtual reality artwork by Miguel Chavalier. This amazing digital art projection adorns the Saint-Eustache Church. Imaginary sky charts realizing in real time as colored networks of light spreading out in the form of sinuous webs. Large meshes shapeshift following the movements of visitors. Thus creating ever renewed, diversified universes. Projection highlights the church’s architecture. Volumes of the columns and ribbed vaults come to life due to movement. Accentuating perfectly flow, and lightness.
I am inspired by visiting cities around the world. Also, nature, science, design, and architecture. Contrary to what one might think, my digital works continue along the lines of nineteenth- and twentieth-century art history. Through their various pictorial investigations and their intellectual approaches, these artists, in a sense, prefigure for me Digital Art. The Pointillist movement, which arose from Seurat’s investigations and which were inspired by the theories of Michel Eugène Chevreul on the diffraction of light, prefigured the cathode ray tube and the computer screen. The artists from the Kinetic art, the Op’art and the GRAV, such as Vasarely, Soto, Le Parc, Morellet or Cruz Diez… make researchs about optics or the diffraction of light, introduced first form of interactivity, prefigure digital world.
In each era, artists have always used the means of their time. In the early 1980s, computing was becoming increasingly present in the media. People began to talk about the information society. It was this still-virgin territory, yet to be explored by contemporary creative artists. I wanted to go deeper into that. What attracts me are the limitless possibilities and ever-changing nature of new technology. They represented diversity of forms and colors, on whose basis I could work on the image. So I could modify it, and regenerate it. It is now possible to retranscribe the notion of real time with generative technology. It is a real step forward in art. We can create works which aren’t yet finished and which can still be enjoyed and interacted with by the public. Digital art is capable of regenerating new ideas, creating a new poetic universe able to lift emotions.
I am more and more interested in developing multi-sensory creations that stimulate all the senses. Collaboration with others artists helps me achieve this. Such artists are the composers Jacopo Baboni Schilingi and Michel Redolfi. I would like to continue developing more immersive artworks. Immersion is a central concept in my work because it gives the viewer a unique experience and enriches the world of emotiveness. It creates unique bodily sensations and allows people to immerse themselves completely in a strange and mysterious universe. As a result it creates place with mixed image, sound, and interaction.
I am working on an unprecedented artwork: “In/out – Artificial Paradises”. Show will be on April 2017 in the park of Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire. We will create this outdoor installation out of two geodesic domes placed in each other. So the visitors will be able enter in the dome and discover a virtual garden projected on the 360° wall. The music by Jacopo Baboni Schillingi will go along with the mystery apparition of the flowers.
Voûtes Célestes, Virtual Reality Projection Partnership
